Founded in 1888, Royal Portrush holds the distinction of being the only golf club outside Great Britain to have hosted The Open Championship. The 1951 Open was won by Max Faulkner in what remains the only Open played on Irish soil. The club then waited 68 years for the return of the Open, which finally came in 2019 to scenes of enormous national celebration — Shane Lowry's victory in front of a home crowd in the rain remains one of the most emotional moments in the history of the championship.
